Tokyo Police Club and Tribes

Oh hi there…it’s that time again! This time, some ‘newer’ music…ish

Tokyo Police Club

Not from Japan, not in the police. They’re actually from Canada, and all rather white and skinny so, once again, an Indie band with an illogical name.

Me trying to be funny aside, this is a band you should listen to.Llike, really.

You may have heard of them. A few years ago, around summer 2007 if my memory serves me well, TPC (as they shall now be abbreviated to) were a buzz band. Yes- that dreaded phenomenon that every music hack is raving about, but that will probably flop horribly when they release their hugely? anticipated debut. And although the signs were promising, the band’s EP ‘Lessons in Crime’ was rather spiffing, it all went downhill when people started calling them the ‘Canadian Strokes’ (arrrgh! Come up with something original!) and they released a pretty damp squib-esque debut album that was barely longer than the aforementioned EP, but had less than half the charm…

So why am I bothering to write this? Surely they’ve sunk without a trace now? Right?
Wrong dumbass, they’re back. Two years since ‘Elephant Shell’ (the album I mentioned) they have just released ‘Champ’, an album that takes everything that made them so fucking exciting in the first place and multiplies it by a factor of fun. The music is more spaced out and, in a way, gloriously childish. The songs are longer too; where earlier releases saw most tracks only just breaking the two minute mark, now most are nearer to three or four minutes long. Yet happily, none of the urgency has been lost. The music fizzes and bounces along. Yes they do still sound a bit like The Strokes, but in a good way. This is no two bit cover band or cheap rip off.

In terms of actual tracks, ‘Bambi’, ‘Favourite Food’, ‘Favourite Colour’ and ‘Not Sick’ are my personal stand out tunes, especially ‘Bambi’ which just makes me smile. But to be honest, the whole album is very much listenable and well worth a buy.

I have spoken…

Tribes

Now for a really new band, watch this, and enjoy :

Until next time!
