Gnarwolves – CRU
The Gnarwolves boys have been playing
millions of southern UK dates since they revealed themselves to the
world in December 2011 with Party Jams (PJ), and no doubt
after releasing CRU on July 15th, it won’t be
long before the head everywhere else. I’m sure if you were to ask
a person who has heard of Gnarwolves, they may not have heard much of
PJ, but they will probably reply with “didn’t they have
that video that went viral recently?”
That song, History Is Bunk, is
the opening track and is quite possibly the catchiest song you’ll
listen to this year. It is a fantastic opening song, as it has
already grabbed your ears by the throat in the happiest way possible
and makes you want to listen to it over and over, followed on aptly
by We Want The Whip! which is equally as catchy. Community,
Stability, Identity is a new realm for the boys, as it is
significantly slower than any song they’ve ever released, and
they’ve nailed it. It adds a nice variation, which was the only
thing PJ was really lacking, giving CRU a part where
you can slowly bop your head and jam, grab a beer and chill, rather
than want to run in circles. A Gram Is Better.. & Oh,
Brave New World, continue the consistency of punky jams, with
notable features in each being strongly pitch bent vocals and
sing-alongs, “I got control, I got control” which when I
first heard it reminded me of an old school Green Day with an English
twist and about 140bpm faster. Coffee is a perfect song to
round up, as it combines the slow jams of Community.. as well
with the expected catchiness that a Gnarwolves song delivers. They
found their feet and have expanded on it perfectly, without any
radical changes.
If I were to say to you Gnarwolves are
a pop-punk band, you’d all agree with me, however they are more of
a punk-pop band, as they’ve lent more to the punk side, which a lot
of nowadays pop-punk bands don’t seem to be doing, could this be a
revival of proper pop punk? Quite possibly, and Gnarwolves are did a
good job of holding the fort with Party Jams, CRU could
be their first wave of attack, and it’s looking very promising.
CRU will be released on July 15th
through Day By Day Records, the release show is in Brighton on the
same day and there will be pizza.
