On Thursday night, some point past midnight (so yes, technically Friday morning smart-arse) and slightly drunk I decided to pose the question.
'What are your top five favourite songs, ever'
It turns out, that is really quite a hard question to answer.
For one, if it comes as a surprise, how are you supposed to trawl through every song you've ever heard and pick five on the spot?
Also, how the hell do you narrow it down?
And what if you find that, like we did, you'll probably think of a different set of songs the next day?
In fact, because I'd drunk a nice amount of Cider and Whisker, I can't even remember all the songs I picked on the night. Point is I thought I'd have a crack at it again, having had a couple of days to think...
Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today.
Some of the best hardcore, ever. A lot of very good music in the genre was written during the 80s and it's almost like, by 1989 when this cracker came out, Civ and the rest of Gorilla Biscuits had figured out how to use all that inspiration to write one brilliant album, of which is the stand out track. For me, only Minor Threat and Black Flag consistently came close to this.
Brand New - Ok I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't
I am a pretty big Brand New fan, no need to hide it. There was always going to be a track here from Jesse and co, the question was simply which one. There was about six or seven I thought of, but this track won out. It has everything that was best about Brand New before they went a bit bonkers. Angry, atmospheric but still with a touch of the pop-punk charm straight from their first albums. I will probably get the lyrics tattooed on me one day, just saying.
Belle and Sebastian - Expectations
Belle and Sebastian, a slightly twee indie band that can actually write good songs and don’t rely on the Hippster brigade for record sales. This is a classic, perhaps not their most famous song, but my personal favourite. Probably speaks volumes about me...but whatever.
The Libertines - Don't Look Back Into The Sun
The Libertines, the first band that ever grabbed me by the collar, probably the reason I'm such a geek in the first place. My favourite Libertines song (a bit clichéd I know). Nothing more to say.
Sunny Day Real Estate - Seven
This track introduced me to real emo music. Possibly my favourite genre was opened up to me by this song, and the band’s debut that I got after hearing it. There are tracks I think are 'better' as standalone songs, but in a soppy, emotional way, this is still my favourite...
Of course, as I mentioned at the start, this all has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Tomorrow at least a few of these choices will have changed, but right here, right now, this is 'the five'.
Question is, what’s yours?
Some big tunes!
ReplyDeleteStart Today and Up The Bracket are definitely up there with my favourite albums aswell.
