Gallows, oh Gallows, why did you do this?
Seriously, I appreciate what they're trying to do. Imagine this, your singer leaves you in slightly acrimonious circumstances, half the internet assumes this means you've broken up and when you announce that you are in fact continuing and that your new singer will be the ex-guitarist from recently split up Canadian legends Alexisonfire people get are generally either confused or pissed off. But no matter, you tour, rehearse and record a new EP. You are determined to keep going and prove all the naysayers wrong. I mean after all, you've done it all before so why can't you do it again?
There's only one problem, the song you chose to release first isn't very good. It's repetitive and dull and lacks the cut throat edge that 'old Gallows' had. It’s not that they've got a new vocalist (the vocals are pretty good) it’s just that nothing else seems to be up to the standard it was before. Someone has stuck a wet cloth over the guitar sound (to be fair, that also happened over some bits of ‘Grey Britain’) and whoever wrote the lyrics needs to be given a slap with a dictionary for simply writing a third of a lyric then copying it out a few more times. This is all the more disappointing to me because, quite unlike all the ‘London Is The Reason shouldn’t be sung by a Canadian!!!!’ internet trolls out there, I really wanted this to work. But it doesn’t. Sorry guys.
Now it is only one song off the EP, so I'm not going to be a complete arse and judge the entire thing on these 2 minutes and forty seconds of averageness. But let’s hope they raised their game on the other tracks, or I could have wasted by pre-order.
But what do you guys think? Comments below, feel free to hate on me.
