I often get told that I write too much about ‘heavy’ music. Apparently not everyone likes screaming, which was news to me, but hopefully this shows that when I’m not banging my head in a darkened room to what my flatmate describes as ‘noise’ I also enjoy something a little less full on.
Local Windsor band Hindsights play a sweet brand of melodic emo that will have fans of Knapsack, Sunny Day Real Estate and Title Fight lining up along with your average indie kid to get their hands on this (free) four track demo.
Opening track ‘Glazed’ is a pretty astonishing way for any demo to start with bouncy guitars and some cracking lyrics (‘Someone take me, somewhere where I can close my eyes’) delivered with the sort of vocal passion that males you believe every word of it like you’d written the song yourself. There’s a lovely lower tempo quiet bit in the middle too that makes you think the song is fading out before it bursts back into life.
‘Home’ sounds a bit more like straight up Title Fight with a driving rhythm line and raw edged dual vocals asking ‘Just take me home’. The songs ends with a reverby guitar line that leads straight into ‘Bones’ a minute and a half that see’s the opening pop-punk guitar thrash transform into a spaced out, Christie Front Drive-esque (I like making up words) number.
The final track ‘Sixteen’ has a lot of the things that as a whole make this demo so good. A mix of driven riffs and more expansive, reverb rich guitar hooks, tight drumming, heartfelt lyrics and an original delivery that is far more attractive to listen too than a lot of the Title Fight rip of bands that you might try and lump Hindsights with. More importantly, as mentioned above, you believe in what is being said n every line of every song, which is something missing from a lot of albums let alone demos.

La Dispute - Wildlife (No Sleep Records)
This album pretty much follows the same pattern and structure as the previous one; it's like another great book from your favourite author. Lyrically the record is superb, and the music that accompanies it is just as good, they complement each other so well. They are one of very few bands who have this ability to merge music and words in ways thought impossible. From the first note it is utterly compelling, right until the very last. It is an album that everyone must hear.
