So I was thinking the other night (never a good thing), a lot of 'old' music is viewed as very uncool my 'yoofs' today. Sure, music journalists and bands may wax lyrical about how amazing so and so were and how they wish they'd been the Stones before they got old and even shitter...but who really cares? Most people would rather listen to a band's music than be subjected to their front man droning on about how much he's influenced by Bowie and the Beatles...
But it really IS good music (well, some of it is good stuff at least), the big bands of the 60's and 70's may, for the most part, not be the most 'hip' stuff to listen too, but it doesn't change the fact that the songs are worth listening too, so to that end, heres a list with some videos of a few examples of 'Dad Music' you should check out...promise you it's good!
The Who - Pictures of Lily:
A song about...well you can guess from listening. Not the Who's most famous song, but I think its brilliant, especially the lyrics near the end.
Lou Reed - Hangin' Round:
Off the purely brilliant Transformer album, which everyone should own in my opinion. This song isn't like the better know 'Perfect Day' and 'Walk on the Wild Side' from the same album, it's a bit rougher and a bit more 'rawk'. It's a shame Lou Reed went up his own arse, he really was rather good...
The Stooges - I Wanna' Be Your Dog:
Need I say more...
David Bowie - Heroes:
Bowie may be a bit odd for a lot of people's tastes, and also sickening beloved by all the 'hippest' indie bands, but he did make some of the best albums of the 70's. 'Low' and 'Heroes' (from which this song is taken, surprisingly...) being prime examples. It's anthemic without being an Oasis style terrace chant chorus number, and is brilliant.
The Kinks - You Really Got Me:
People say that Led Zeppelin invented metal, or maybe Sabbath. Actually it was this song. Using a broken amp and some brutal power chords, The Kinks made distortion acceptable in the mainstream music of the time and opened the way for heavier and heavier guitar sounds. It may sound tame now, but imagine its 1964 and you've just heard that guitar breakdown for the first time bitch...
There's so much more I could rant about, maybe one day I'll compile a full list of amazing retro shit that you'll all obviously love, but for now I'll wheel my mod scooter back into the shed and hide my mop top wig...have fun.
