Let's Talk About: Stresscase

Ah powerviolence, the black sheep of the 90's riding back on a tidal wave of hype and excitement in the new year (2o11) as bands such as Trash Talk decided that playing slowly wasn't for them and directly re-influenced hardcore bands playing at super fast speeds and giving people serious neck related injuries from furious headbanging.

Stresscase is a 4 piece powerviolence (hardcore punk for all the PV purists) band coming straight from LA to make some serious noise and not only shred faces, but shred minds with some deep thinking intellectually stimulating lyrics much like their forebearers Despise You (both DY and SC have a female vocalist, which is a minor point seeing as girls are more than ever prevelant in hardcore/metal).

The EP "Cut Me Off" is only about 8 minutes long and in the time it's taken me to write this sentence I'm already half way through track 2. A lot of powerviolence afficindos will sneer at the fact that its contempary noise and that they have had a clear influence from their predecessors and a lot of grind fans (such as myself) may take issue with that they are basically just playing really fast and haven't included anything else to what can potentially be quite a verstalie genre.

All this nay-saying and niggling genre hunting can be cast aside the minute track 4 on the album "Biting Sheep" comes on, and treats you a merciless pummelling of both mind and ears with one of my favorite lyrics of any band this year "with women on the streets, selling their bodies/with poverty affected our children as well/where killers and rapists are free from their cells" which is not only a direct attack on what is basically a truth around the world but also giving a oppurtunity for some sweet chanting sing alongs.

You can grab the album for free off their bandcamp or off my beloved grindcore kareoke, and even if you listen once and decide that you don't like it for any reason, this is definetly a band not to be slept on.

  3. Stresscase is a good hardcore punk band however I wouldn't go as far as calling them a power violence band, their is a recognizable difference between sc and pv bands, I guess it all falls under hardcore, however I feel like you didn't grasp the genre as best as you could, don't mean to put you down but it had to be said nevertheless,I like your blog

  6. I'd say Trash Talk are, however, partialy responsible for a lot of the hype in the hardcore scene today.

  7. To c86: yes I guess so, me personally I think any hardcore band with a music video equals sell out, unless the video was done diy, but trash talk isn't really a band to be considered a pioneer of the genre, when talking about pv like the other anon brought up I totally agree that either infest Charles bronson and no comment should of been brought up to rep pv, but yeah I guess trash talk can back up stresscases genre since they are both pretty punk hc, I wouldn't say trash talk is responsible their just another hc band getting big pretty soon be on MTV selling shirts at hot topic, selling out, if you just barely got into the hardcore scene since like 08 you would probably see trash talk as an influence..but ehhh I refuse to give credit to where credit isn't due
