Decemberism - Man Overboard
I've always been a big fan of Man Overboard so back in 2010 when I heard they were releasing a xmas song I was pumped. I was expecting a typical MOB esque number with maybe a fruity sing-along or two but instead all I found was a particularly bleak xmas song about basically being alone and sad over the december holidays. This song has gone through a personal journey with me and I can instantly conjour about 7 different times this song has spoken to me (3 happy, 4 sad) and even though it's got some still patent MOB lyrical whackness "chasing dreams like the babies playing duck duck goose" it's a pretty good song to jam on and have a stare out the window to or to drive home to, especially if your alone at xmas.
Christmas Means Nothing Without You - Matt Brasch And Laura Bonicki
What everyone catchy xmas song needs is a good beat and a overally sappy yet sweet tone and "Christmas means nothing without you" nails all those things on the head within the opening verse. A essentially classic wintery song about realising that spending xmas with someone special and someone you care about is all that really matters regardless of situation. The sort of quirky duet that Laura and Matt have is particularly touching and I can definetly see this being used in some quirky indie rom-com set at xmas and starring zoey deschanel/katy perry. A nice upbeat little xmas number and in the words of the song "BUT THESE THINGS MEANS NOTHING WITHOUT THE COMPANYYYY OF YOU"
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer - DMX
Looking past the comedic fact that it's DMX doing a childrens xmas song, on the piano, with comedy dog noises and you actually realise that DMX has brought a tenderness to it that no-other musician could. See DMX and Rudolph aren't uncommon in the fact they are both outcasts who are mocked by their peers for being different and often feel dejected and undervalued but still strive to be the best they can be and in the end recieve the credit they deserve from the highest sources, not only validating themselves but proving to their haters that they can truely be something great. So I beg you to look past this bizarre song choice, and look deep into DMX's eyes and see the pain and sadness that wallows inside, he probably didn't have fun at any of his christmas'es and neither do Rudolph, but they have both proved themselves and immortalised themselves in song.
