With one third of us returned from (involuntary) exile in
the wilds of Scotland and another about to come back shortly it is time to
start taking a look forward to what the next few months and weeks are likely to
offer up. On the whole there is a lot of exciting stuff scheduled to hit the
shelves through the rest of summer and the autumn, with a load of bands coming
to the shores of this green and pleasant land. Obviously this list isn’t all
inclusive, more a collection of the things I am most excited/nervous/anxious
about over the next few months.
Albums
Bloc Party – Four. Kele
and the crew return with one of the most anticipated albums of the autumn. The
first single from the record is a little weak, but there’s been a lot of buzz
around Four in the mainstream music
press that may well be justified. Consider me excited.
Goodtime Boys – EPs. One of my favourite bands are releasing two
EPs in the coming once, one of new material and another US exclusive with,
among other things, a Kate Bush cover. Screamo band covering Kate Bush? Need I
say more.
Touché Amore – Live at
the BBC. It may only be a few songs on a 7” which you’ll probably already
have studio versions of if you’re a big TA fan but as they’re a pretty handy
package live this is worth picking up if you can get your hands on it.
Kerouac – Heavy
Hearted. Out later in August (although if you pre order it you’ll get the
download now) Kerouac’s farewell discography LP may not be long but it sure it
brutal. Many would argue that they are the best band the UK hardcore scene has
ever produced and while I’d personally side with Throats in that particular argument this is still something that
you should own if you have any interest in the genre. Raw, loud and
uncompromising as well as being your last chance to get your mits on a Kerouac
physical release.
Basement –
Colourmeinkindness. Of all the album scheduled to come out this side of
Christmas this is the one I’m most worried about. Basement have become the mother
of all hype generators and are pretty much up there with Title Fight, The Descendants
and Jesus when it comes to fans of the more melodic end of hardcore. With an
indefinite hiatus announced by the band two weeks ago this their second LP is
going to have to be flawless to live up to the hopes and expectations of pretty
much every Basement fan on the planet. Of course they produced a near flawless
debut LP (and EP before that) so they may well strike gold again. However if
they don’t brace yourselves for the flood of upset Tumblr posts and sky
rocketing Ebay priced for all their ‘old stuff’.
Slabdragger/Meadows –
Split 12”. Very little to say about this other than it’ll be worth it for
some new Slabdragger alone…
Blur – 21. The
best band (along with Pulp) to rise from the sea of mediocrity and stale larger
that was Brit pop, Blur have just released this box set to celebrate, you
guessed it, 21 years of being a band. Anyone who listens to Steve Lemaque on 6
music will know he’s been practically crying every time it has been mentioned
for weeks now and I guess most hardcore Blur fans will have been doing the
same. All the albums are also getting a remastered release, which might be better
for anyone who isn’t rich enough to buy a collector box set or is more of a
casual fan (i.e me).
Lower Than Atlantis –
Changing Tune. You heard it here first; this album will either be a
mainstream breaking masterpiece or unmitigated disaster. LTA frontman Mike Duce
has sounded more and more like Liam Gallagher bigging up yet another
substandard Oasis album every time he
talks about it so my money is on it being a flop, but you never know…
Title Fight – Floral
Green. It’s a new Title Fight album. What more do you need to know? It’s going
to be big.
Tours/Shows
Hevy Festival –
this weekend the poser paradise returns. This year’s line up is pretty star
studded, with The Descendants taking
the prize for most anticipated headline slot. However any of you guys lucky
enough to be going will be in for a whole weekend of treats.
Rolo Tomassi UK tour– With a new album coming (not
included in the list about purely so I didn’t spoil you by listing everything
exciting that’s coming out, you have to find some things for yourself) and
support in the form of Oathbreaker
and Goodtime Boys this is going to be
pretty dam special. Small venues plus one of the UKs best live bands plus
killer support equals barrels of fun.
Title Fight/La Dispute
etc UK tour – With Title Fight, La Dispute, Make Do And Mend and Into It,
Over It all touring together the UK is going be given a right treat in
September. Some of the best bands in the American underground playing together
in a host of killer venues. If you can get a ticket this late, do it.
Terror/BWP etc, at
Underworld – Another real joy at one of London’s best (and more stage dive
friendly) venues. There will be broken bones and bloody lips but it is sure to
be worth it.
Bands
Gnarwolves – We’ve
already reviewed their debut EP here at Easynoiz but expect bigger and better
from the band in the future.
Pity Sex – Latest
signing to Run For Cover Records,
their debut EP can be downloaded for free right now. Full of 90s alt rock vibes
that well outweigh the terrible name.
Burnt Earth – Another
band we’ve already reviewed a release by, Burnt Earth fulfil (along with Iron Witch) the doomy, heavy as
lead niche very nicely.
